This week I’ve been working on how to help other people, and whether or not that helps me feel better as part of the bargain.

To see how this has been going so far, check out my previous entry in the experiment on how to help other people.

Conclusions

Well, I can’t say that I’ve really broken any new ground on this. Helping other people does indeed make me feel better. Notably, the amount “better” that I felt doesn’t seem related to the extent of the activity I undertook. Meaning, even a small gesture makes me feel better.

So, add it to your list folks. Take a few moments in the coming week to try and have a positive impact on the world around you. You might be surprised at how much better it makes you feel!

This week I’ve been working on an experiment about how to help other people, and specifically how to help myself by helping other people.

To see how this experiment has been going for me so far, check out yesterday in my experiment on how to help other people.

Clean Up Your Act

Today is a very simple step. Littering is a crime of laziness, and generally it’s complicated by the fact that people can litter recyclable objects.

Without taking any risks (ie. avoid broken glass and other sharp objects) try picking up a few recyclable items and put them in the proper recycling bins. It only takes a few moments of your time, but if everyone made a little gesture like that, it would do wonders for the world around us!

Remember, small acts can have big impacts!

Step Up and do More than your share

In any relationship, whether it’s family, friends or romantic, chores and jobs are divided. We all get our lists of what needs to be done.

Today, I stepped up to do more than my share of work around the house. I didn’t need to, nor was I required to, but I did extra work and that made life happier for everyone.

If you get all the work dropped on you all the time, that’s a bad situation. However, if you occasionally take the time to help out someone else, and they sometimes return the favour, then that’s about as good as life can get!

“Do unto others… you know the rest”

This week has been an experiment in making my life better by helping to make the world a better place.

To see how this has been going so far, check out yesterday’s entry in my experiment in how to help other people!

How to Help Other People – Day 3

Everyone has a pet project. Whether it’s getting in shape, remodeling your kitchen, cleaning your house, writing your novel or anything else, it gives us a focus and occupies our time.

It also keeps us apart from other people.

Today I worked to put aside my pet project and help someone else with their project.

It cost me nothing but my time, but I know my contribution was helpful (albeit small).

In a world that is incredibly busy, it’s hard to find the time to help someone else with their passion project. Often that comes at the cost of our own projects. However, taking the time to help other people can be an important investment, not just in others but in ourselves.

Think on it. After all, when we ask how to help improve ourselves, perhaps we should be asking how to help others instead!

How can you save the world without leaving your sofa? Is that even possible?

This week the experiment is in how to help other people. Does one week of making the world a better place make me feel like a better person? Does it help me in some fundamental way?

To see how the week has gone so far, check out yesterday in my experiment on how to help other people.

How to Help Other People: Slacktivism or just modern economics?

Helping others via the internet has gotten a bad reputation. It’s considered by some to be a lazy outlook on social justice. However, in a weird way, I think it’s the logical extension of the attention economy.

As a consumer in modern society, the greatest asset I have, at least as measured by many advertisers, is my attention. They are willing to pay quite a bit to get a hold if my attention, and even more to keep it in some cases. What does this mean for me? Well, it opens up a whole lot of opportunities for me to do good for the world.

I might not have money to donate to every cause that asks, but for many charities, attention is as good as money. You can click an ad that sponsors charity, follow someone on twitter, of click like on facebook. There are all sorts of actions that can be undertaken that provide a small (but still valuable) payout to charity. All it takes is a bit of research to learn how you can contribute.

However, in this case, I’ll give you a bit of an easy lead on where to find places where you can exchange your attention for making the world a better place.

Start with Ecologyfund. It’s a website that takes profits from clicking on ads and uses it to save wilderness lands around the world.

Another great stop is Hungersite (and all the associated sites). You can help provide food for the hungry and support a host of other causes just by clicking on ads.

Are these the perfect ways to save the world? Perhaps not, but they do make the world a bit better at no cost to you, and that sure is a good start!

A rising tide lifts all boats.

Do you believe that helping others makes us happier?

I do, and a number of studies seem to agree. Volunteering, donating, and giving back to the world around us is an amazing boost to our own happiness.

The real challenge for most of us is how to help other people when you have limited time and limited money.

The good news is, you don’t need to Bill Gates and start a foundation in order to help other people. There are ways that you can positively impact the world with just a small bit of your time and almost no money.

This week, I’ll do at least one thing each day to make someone else happier, or make the world a better place in general. We’ll see how it works out for me?
