Treating Myself Right: Getting a Professional Shave

It wasn’t until my 35th birthday that I ever got a professional shave. Shaving for men is odd. Most of us do it every day, but we always do it ourselves. We were typically taught by our fathers, them by their fathers, etc.

In a world of electric razors and 5 bladed disposable monstrosities that have more technology in them than the average space shuttle, I never understood why men in the 40s and 50s (and some still) would go to barber shops and get a professional shave. In fact, after seeing Sweeney Todd, it seems like the danger of having someone hold a straight razor to your throat was higher than the potential benefit. I was still curious though, why was it so popular when you could buy the tools to shave at home?

Well, on my recent 35th birthday, my wife sent me to find out as part of my present. I went to Starks Barber Company and got their hot lather shave.

All I can say is WOW! Take a look at Ann-Marrie, the barber that did my shave, in her video on YouTube where she demonstrates a hot lather shave.

All of the sudden, I get the 40s and 50s. I get barber shops and professional shaves. I don’t know if I’d go on a weekly basis, but it was remarkably relaxing and calming. I enjoyed it greatly. It was like a spa day. I was a bit nervous about the shave at the start, but within moments Ann-Marrie made me so calm that I didn’t have any trouble with it.

Words can’t really describe the experience – it was luxurious, decadent, and absolutely lovely. While I’m not certain I’d do it weekly, I will do it again. I recommend trying it once in your life, it’s quite an experience!

This is what I’m talkin’ about. Lord Henry style living. Even if we cannot do these things each day, it is nice to splurge once in a while. Glad you took the plunge and did it right. I hate shaving and have it down to twice a week, but that I could handle.

I highly recommend it. It was remarkably cheap when you tack it on to the cost of a haircut too. Frugal and fun make for the best kind of solutions to problems like shaving.

I think there’s an art that never gets shown on TV or in movies. Experiencing it sold me on going back. Thanks for your comment Thomas!
