I’m a firm believer in karma.
By this, I don’t mean that there’s a big accounting book for the universe, but rather that good things can often happen to people who do good things for others. This is the kind of karma that people influence, whether they know it or now. If you see someone doing something good, you favour that person.
Basically, when we take the time to pay it forward and put energy into the system, we’re building up that balance of good karma. Whether this is 100% true or not, it helps me keep an optimistic outlook on life. After all, if this website is all about my journey to finding happiness, I should have that as a focus, right?
Well, today I’m doing some volunteer work with an organization raising funds for the local foodbank. Volunteering has always been an interesting question for me. Conceptually, I love the idea. However, when it comes to giving my time regularly, I hesitate. I don’t feel like i have enough time as-is, so that’s my resistance. Short-term, single night volunteering gigs are my solution. I experience many of the benefits of volunteering, but I don’t have to sacrifice time and jump up my stress level.
During the holiday season there is often a jump in these opportunities. If you find yourself with a night or two off, consider helping out if you can. You’ll meet new people and help yourself feel better by volunteering with a good cause.
Who knows? You might be building up some good karma to use later on. Investing for the future is never a bad idea.
